Girls in Engineering
Designed to spark a lifelong passion and familiarity with technology, this free, fun 5-day camp enables students in the 7th and 8th grade (at the time of application) to create their very own robots, imagine themselves as computer scientists and engineers, and explore the careers and educational opportunities available to them in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Although Girls in Engineering is a girl-focused learning environment, any 7th or 8th grade student of any gender who resides in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties can apply.
Girls in Engineering has made it possible for young minds learn to use the Scratch programming environment for creating 2D games and animation, and Lego NXT for building microprocessor-based robots and interactive art pieces. The camp also includes visits to the Baskin School of Engineering Labs and other exciting activities, for example:
- Building computer games and computer-controlled creations including robots and musical instruments;
- Animating videos;
- Touring research labs, from Bioengineering to Robotics;
- Exploring the UCSC campus and experiencing college life;
- Learning how to prepare for college;
- Exploring Engineering careers;
- Learning about other STEM opportunities available to them such as COSMOS, MESA & science fairs.
